A majority of the published images you see in magazines, newspapers, textbooks, posters, greeting cards, and in advertising are purchased as stock images. "Stock" does NOT mean the images are not quality. Some of the best, most memorable photos published are available as stock downloads from the photographer.
Stock images are also extremely popular with advertising and website designers. They purchase the rights to the images and incorporate a portion of the image, or the whole thing, into their design for resale to their clients for use in book covers, album/cd covers, advertisements, etc. Stock imagery is only practical since designers don't want to be photographers, they want to design - that's their art. Corporations who need images for self promotion and advertising or to just highlight their ideas can find high quality photography in Stock. Plus, it's a lot cheaper than to commision your own photographer or have one on the payroll. |
